Book review: Ruth Kudzi Is This It?

Many of us have thought, at one time or another, how great it would be to leave the shackles of the day job and make a living from what truly makes us happy. But is it really possible?

The lure of a regular income keeps many of us in jobs we otherwise may have left. Add children into the mix and holiday pay, sick pay and a good pension make that steady job all the more desirable.

Ruth Kudzi’s book ‘Is This It?’ looks at how you can leave that dull job you tolerate and find an income, fulfillment and ultimately transform your life with something you are passionate about.

The book opens detailing Ruth’s own journey from a teacher to a full-time business and confidence coach. A move which helped her find flexibility, happiness and a career she feels passionately about.

As a first step, Ruth asks you to look at your life and explore ‘the why’ to see what is important. She asks you to look at your strengths and what makes you happy.

She doesn’t just pose fluffy suggestions, she asks insightful questions which make you really look at where you are and where you want to go.

She looks at major obstacles which stop us doing our dream job such as time and money, and considers ways these can be overcome.

Quitting your job entirely to run your own business may not be the only option Ruth poses. Maybe changing your hours, taking on a different role in the same industry or re-training could provide a better way of life.

I found Ruth’s book quite challenging at times, it really gets down to the nitty-gritty of life choices and makes you question why you do what you do.

I liked the fact she uses real examples of women who have changed their careers. From those who have moved into slightly different roles to those who have up and left the country to do something entirely different.

With the book you also get access to bonus material on Ruth’s website with videos and activities which really makes the whole thing come to life.

I really loved this book, it was less self help fluff and more practical guidance and support to help you make real changes in your life.

It has definitely made me look at things differently and it is a book I intend to keep on the shelf and dip back into.

So if you have always dreamt of a different kind of life and making your side-hustle your day job, this book could get you on your way to doing just that.

  1. I don’t have a dull job I’m unhappy with, but I can only ever find short term contracts and soon will have to be job hunting again. I would love to make my side hustle a viable job. Sounds like I should read this book!

  2. Thanks for the recommendation. I could really do with looking at where I want to go career wise as my maternity leave is just about to come to an end x

  3. This sounds so good, especially it sounds like it doesn’t pull any punches about how to get on and go about it all. I just wish at 18 I had been less susceptible to what everyone else idea of what I should have been doing, and broadened my mind with all the options out there. I was too traditional. got there in the end though!!
