Eco-friendly tableware review

AD The products were given to us.

With Seth being 15 months we are head-long into weaning and all the fun that comes with it, including trying to find the right tableware.

I also try, but often fail, to do my bit for the environment and have avoided using plastic products both with toys and things he uses to eat.

We were very kindly offered the chance to try out some Nuby eco tableware and were sent a box huge containing a bowl, tumbler, section plate, spoons along with a knife and fork.

Ideal for breakfast cereal or pasta

We know plastic is bad for our environment but some of the statistics around it are horrifying. The world is producing 300 million tons of plastic each year and according to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic has been found in more than 60 per cent of all seabird and 100 per cent of sea turtle species.

The Nuby products are all made out of rice husk, a by-product of rice milling that would otherwise be discarded or burned.

They are 100 per cent biodegradable, plant-based with no added synthetic or chemicals but are really durable and can be used in the microwave and dishwasher and can handle hot food.

Not only that, they are 100 per cent compostable so you can literally stick them in your compost bin and they will be gone in 90 days.

Compare that to plastic which can take anything from 20 years to 500 year to full decompose.

I was absolutely delighted with all the products we used, although some are for older children, but will be great when he gets to the right age.

This was our favourite – super useful for a bigger meal

The section plate was my favourite as it was really big and perfect for Seth’s growing appetite, my own slight drawback is it doesn’t stick to his tray on his high chair and he has a habit of flinging it about.

The bowl is great and works really well for cereal, pasta and snacks.

The designs are really fun and attractive and in addition they are super-durable. You can’t really get a more stringent tester than a one year old flinging them about all over the place and they stood the test very well.

The biggest plus for me were the fantastic eco-credentials. Plastic is of course easy to buy and cheap but at least we know these products will bio-degrade easily and won’t be clogging up the environment long after we’ve gone.

Seth is a big fan!

Some scary plastic facts

  • Approx 5,000 items of marine plastic pollution have been found per mile of beach in the UK
  • Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans.
  • 12 million tonnes of plastic are poured into the ocean every year
  • 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and one million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually
