Short break review – Loch Lomond our Scottish adventure

In the dark depths of the Yorkshire winter while planning holidays I thought Loch Lomond would be a great place for a short summer break at the end of the school year.
What I didn’t account for was that I’d chosen the only rainy weekend in a summer of seemingly endless scorching sunshine. But being British we packed up the barbecue, our raincoats two dogs and a 12 year old and headed off.
Sitting just 45 minutes out of Glasgow, Loch Lomond it is the largest fresh-water lake in the British Isles being 24 miles long and five miles wide in parts and surrounded by stunning scenery.
Our home for three nights was a fairly remote, but very beautiful lodge just outside Drymen and a few miles from the banks of the Loch.
Despite having limited time and pretty awful weather we packed in lots into our three night break. Along with lots of  walking, went swimming in the Loch and visited both Luss and Balmaha.
Both places offered water sports, boat trips and a range of tourist shops, pubs and restaurants with Luss being the livelier of the two.
Swimming in the Loch at Luss was brilliant and we managed to get out before another almighty downpour.
We’re a fairly outdoorsy family and not fazed by getting a bit wet; although we did retreat to our lodge for Monopoly after a particularly thorough soaking on one occasion.
When the sun did appear we made the most of it and out came the barbecue.
There is so much to see and do in Loch Lomond it felt like we barely touched the surface. With a longer stay we would have gone to Inveraray or Oban. I am also desperate to visit the famous Loch Fyne restaurant.
If you don’t like the outdoors Loch Lomond may not be for you, however there is the option to soaking up the lovely scenery from a comfort of one of the many fabulous restaurants or cafes. Those with smaller children would love the boat rides and beaches the Loch has to offer.
We will definitely return to Loch Lomond, our short visit placed it as a firm favourite for UK breaks.
Holidaying in this country means you’re never guaranteed the weather but for a place like Loch Lomond it is definitely worth the risk.
